You would be forgiven for thinking that the Chilean Wine industry is relatively young as their wines have only arrived here in any great quantity over the last decade or so. However, grapes for wine have been grown in Chile since the 1500's when the conquistadors took vine cuttings from Spain in order to grow sacramental wine. It did take the introduction of French grape varieties in 1824 though to launch the modern industry and produce commercially viable wines. There was then an explosion in wine estates growing Bordeaux grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and also Burgundy grapes such as Chardonnay.

There may be wide geographical climatic variations from North to South in Chile but the central region is compared with Mediterranean locations. A hundred year old irrigation system channels the melting snows from the Andes to make the vineyards fertile. This combination of regular sun, not excessive heat and pure water produces grapes that fully ripen, ensuring wines with soft, round flavours, that are smooth and juicy.
